Three years ago I sat in a café in Ekkamai, Bangkok, with a friend. We’d just left the co-working space Hubba and were discussing affiliate marketing, something we’d both been involved in for some time.
We were talking about how Thailand was fast becoming a hub for affiliate marketers (or a tax haven). And then it came to me! We could make a ton of money if we organised the first affiliate marketing conference in Thailand, and at that time probably the first in the region.
These types of conference-cum-seminar doos always warrant high ticket prices, with attendees lured by the promise of insider secrets being revealed by keynote speakers, and of course huge networking opportunities with other marketers and advertisers. It’s a sure winner, I said.
My pal shrugged it off as “a lot of work”, and something that would need a huge investment of time and money to make it appealing enough for people to travel halfway across the world for.
He was right. And so it passed as just another of my fleeting entrepreneurial ideas that if acted on would probably have made me a million, but instead never came close to fruition (too many ideas too little time). I booked a trip to the beach instead.
Fast-forward two years and that idea is now being executed by a group of people with the resources and clout to pull it off.
Affiliate World Asia is the brainchild of the guys behind the Stack That Money affiliate forum. It will be held between the 7th and 9th of December this year, and promises to be quite something…if you’re an affiliate marketer, that is – if not, stop reading now and read one of my other posts…
This actually isn’t the first time something like this has taken place in Bangkok. The same STM outfit held a 7-day retreat of sorts here in March 2014, which I attended. It was more a seminar-type meetup than a conference, with presentations at the Grand Sheraton Hotel, followed by parties, lunches, outings and finally a 3-day trip to Koh Samui.
This was a free affair, except the trip to Koh Samui, of course. While the STM guys did promote their forum membership package along the way, they charged zero bucks for the seminar, paid for a wonderful buffet at the Marriott Hotel, and for the first round or two of drinks at the bar of a few parties – pretty darn generous to say the least.
No doubt the STM guys were impressed with the turnout at that meetup, subsequently realising the potential for something bigger; especially considering the ever-growing amount of affiliates living in Thailand, and indeed the surrounding region.
They also have a solid platform to leverage from in the form of Nicky Cakes Thailand Money Makers Group (TMM), which holds a monthly meetup in Bangkok and has a Skype group boasting over 100 members, a large percentage of who will be willing to pay for a ticket to the conference.
By the way, if you work online in any way – SEO, affiliate marketing, web dev, etc, – you can join the TMM Facebook group here.
How Much is an Affiliate World Asia Ticket?
This may come as a shock to some, but the early bird price for the silver ticket is $349, and will be going up to $699. The gold pass, which has some minor extra benefits such as prioritised seating and access to the speech slides post the conference, is $449, and will be going up to $899.
What I will say in defence of the price, having spoken to the organisers last Wednesday at the TMM meetup, is that it’s going to be everything a bad Affiliate Summit isn’t – basically not the affiliate industry's version of a rock concert; rowdy, crowded and difficult to have a decent conversation with anyone.
Moreover, people tend to go the summits for the epic partying opportunity; an excuse to get away from the wife for a weekend and go nuts rather than to actually get some solid insider knowledge and contacts. Not to say ACA won’t have some awesome partying going on. Come on, no city does nights out like Bangkok does.
Will I Be Going?
I should bloody cocoa! (Old English saying). As an affiliate who has been here since 2008, I kind of feel obliged too.
I’m a tad annoyed that it’s so close to Xmas, as I wanted to be back in London for the festivities early this year and take my daughter up to Hamleys and that sort of thing. But If I do the conference and leave by the 15th I’ll still have a solid 10 days before the Santa gets to town.
For me the ticket price is no big deal because I can claim this back as a tax break anyway, but I understand for a newbie marketer how this might seem pretty steep.
My advice is this: If you’re struggling to make money in CPA marketing, be it dating, lead generation of any other kind, mobile installs or whatever, I’d go. There’s been many a time in my life where I’ve “ummed” and “ahrred” about whether to go to something like this, thinking I probably won’t get anything out of it, or that the people will be all clicky and arrogant, and while that has been the case at a couple of events, even still, I’ve always come away with one gem of information, an amazing contact, or even better, made a good friend.
What I will say about this conference is that it will be heavily CPA focussed, which means it won’t have much relevance for those doing commission per sale marketing in the form of promoting products from networks like Clickbank, Shareasale, and CJ.com.
CPA marketers tend to forget that that the SEO guys and gals promoting products from blogs and getting traffic organically, and from Adwords and Bing too, make up a huge percentage of the online marketing industry, and a hugely lucrative one at that. The CPA model tends to be quite a different beast, and therefore you’ll be a little disappointed if you’re not doing CPA and running traffic on one of the big platforms like Exoclick, TJ, 7Search, etc.
What’s on the Affiliate World Agenda?
I definitely get the vibe that Affiliate World Asia will be a more intimate experience than its US rivals; less people, better organised and personal access to some of the top CPA marketers in the game, and advertising networks like Clickdealer, iBallers, Avazu, Go2Mobi, etc.
Here’s a lowdown on what to expect:
- Panels and speeches from industry superstars
- Traffic-focussed networking meet ups (Facebook, Mobile, Dating and more!)
- Training workshop for affiliate newcomers and intermediates
- A day-long market to find new business connections with more than 100 companies, with a strong focus on companies in Asia.
Tickets are on sale now and available here.
There’s also a Facebook page for the event here.
