No doubt you have seen foreign (farang) faces among the crowds on TV during these latest protests. To be blunt it is a very stupid thing to do, not just because it’s illegal but also because it’s dangerous.
Let us not forget the Italian photographer Fabio Polenghi who was tragically gunned down in the 2010 uprising – he was a resident at my condo block. Fabio unknowingly walked into a war zone, thinking that the protests would be, like they were the day beforehand, a place of music, dancing and togetherness. He was quite simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Thais have been shot dead and several badly injured in the latest protests. Grenades have been thrown into crowds indiscriminately and fights have broken out. The fact is, what might look like a peaceful and somewhat fun day from afar can quickly turn violent and fatal. Moreover, if you value your visa, don’t get involved, certainly if you have commitments like a job and family here.
Stay safe on all fronts and stay away.
